Money Money Money Coin Activities and Centers CCSS Aligned

This 29 page download includes 5 activities or centers with printable worksheets and coin manipulative cards. These activities are aligned with CCSS 2.MD.8. Scaffolding, Extension, and alternative variations to these activities are offered in the teacher instructions.

Please note when you print out the coin cards if you print the front and back the value of the coin will be on the back of the coins. There are 8 pages of 8 coin cards. 

The center activities include:
Concentration- print out as many coin cards and values as appropriate for your group. For this game do not print the coins and values front to back. Students lay out the cards face down. Partners take turns turning over cards to match the amount of coins with the value.

Quiz Quiz Trade– Print the coin cards on page 4-19 front to back. Cut them apart and give one to each student. Have students quiz each other to see if they can count the correct amount. Partners then trade cards and find a new partner. 

War– Give students one set (page 4-19 front to back, cut out). Students split all the cards between each other. Each partner turns over one card at a time. The student with the larger total takes both cards. Continue playing until one person is out of cards. If there is a tie, both partners lay down three cards face down, then turn the fourth over, the person with the highest fourth card takes all 
cards played that turn.

Draw and Add– Using the additional handout on page 20 and 23 on the back to show their work. Students will work in partners. Each student will draw one card at a time. Partners have to add their coin amounts together. (This activity could be done individually, student would just draw two cards.) Extension– Roll, Draw, and Add. Same routine except roll a dice. Student draws that many cards and adds them together.

Draw and Subtract– Using the additional handout on page 21 and 23 on their back to show their work. Students will work in partners. Each student will draw one card at a time. Each individual will find the values of their coins. Partners will subtract the smaller value from the larger value. (This activity could be done individually, student would just draw two cards.)

Ordering Coins– Give each student or pair of students a sheet of coins. Use page 23-24 Have each individual or partnership calculate the total of each card on the sheet. Have students cut the cards apart and put them in order from least to greatest.
