Falling Leaves, Cozy Reads: Our Autumn Library HaulAs the weather started to cool and the first leaves began to change colors, I thought it would be fun to lean into the season with our library picks. I went searching for books that matched what my kids were already noticing outside – the trees changing colors, crunchy leaves on the ground, and the sky getting dark a little earlier each day. It turned out to be a huge hit. Suddenly they were pointing out every red and yellow leaf, talking about “autumn” nonstop, and curling up with me to read about it all. In this post, I’m sharing the fall-themed books we brought home from the library that sparked the most excitement, conversations, and cozy read-aloud moments. Pete the Cat: Falling for AutumnLately, my little guy has been more and more interested in Pete the Cat and he selected this title himself. He didn't seem disappointed either. Pete the Cat: Falling for Autumn is a cheerful story that helps kids see the fun in seasonal change. At first, Pete isn’t so sure about summer ending, but when he tries apple picking, hay rides, and corn mazes, he discovers that autumn has its own kind of magic. With its warm illustrations and gentle message, this story reminds young readers to embrace new experiences and find joy in every season. It’s a perfect fall read that celebrates gratitude, adventure, and an open heart. Counting on FallThis was a good pick to appeal to my son's love for numbers and counting. Counting on Fall is a beautiful blend of math and nature that helps kids see numbers all around them. Through clever “What if?” questions, young readers imagine how animals and plants might use math—like leaves falling in patterns or whales racing in groups. With colorful cut-paper illustrations and playful text, this book turns counting and number sense into an exciting outdoor adventure. It encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and a love for both math and the natural world, making it a perfect read for curious minds who enjoy exploring and learning at the same time. A Bold Pumpkin PlanI wasn't too sure about this one at first, but it did hold his interest and I was pleasantly surprised. A Bold Pumpkin Plan is a story about creativity, courage, and friendship. When Hedgehog sets out to build his dream home, he faces challenges that push him to step out of his comfort zone and believe in himself. Along the way, he discovers that teamwork and determination can turn even the biggest plans into reality. With Katy Hudson’s beautifully detailed illustrations and gentle humor, this story encourages young readers to be brave, solve problems, and celebrate their own ideas. It’s a delightful tale that reminds kids that big dreams start with bold hearts. Fletcher and the Falling LeavesFletcher and the Falling Leaves is a tender and cute story about change, wonder, and the beauty of nature. When Fletcher the fox notices the leaves falling from his favorite tree, he worries that something is wrong. But as the seasons shift, he discovers the magic that comes with winter’s arrival. This book helps young readers understand the natural cycle of the seasons while celebrating curiosity and care for the world around them. It’s a comforting read that reminds kids every change brings something beautiful. The Leaf ThiefOk, so this was BY FAR their favorite fall themed book. I have no idea how many times we read this during the 3 weeks it was checked out from the library, but the kids were obsessed. The Leaf Thief is a hilarious and heartwarming story that turns the changing seasons into a fun mystery. When Squirrel notices his beautiful leaves disappearing, he’s sure there’s a sneaky thief to blame. Determined to catch the culprit, he races through the forest accusing funny animal friends and learning a big lesson about nature along the way. With cheerful illustrations and a laugh-out-loud story, this book helps young readers understand the seasons while exploring feelings of worry and curiosity. It’s a delightful reminder that change is natural—and sometimes even exciting! Oh and I immediately checked out The Snow Thief, The Flower Thief and various other books in this series and they were ALL a huge hit with the kiddos. SweepI must say I was fooled by the cover and the title. This isn't a book about fall, but my kids loved the illustrations and I liked the topic of emotional regulation that was so cleverly woven into the storyline. Sweep by Louise Greig is a story about a boy named Ed who lets a small bad mood grow until it takes over everything around him. With the help of the detailed illustrations by Julia Sarda, young readers see how feelings can build up and how important it is to let them go. A Very Big FallA Very Big Fall by Emmy Kastner is a delightful story about three leaves—Birch, Oak, and Maple—who each handle the change of seasons in their own way. When autumn arrives, they face the excitement and uncertainty of turning colors and eventually falling from their tree. Through humor and warmth, this story shows that change can be both scary and exciting. Young readers will love the playful personalities of the leaves and the colorful illustrations that bring fall to life. Goodbye Summer, Hello AutumnGoodbye Summer, Hello Autumn is a gentle and poetic journey through the changing seasons. The story follows a young child who takes a peaceful walk, greeting nature as it shifts from the warmth of summer to the cool beauty of autumn. Through friendly hellos and goodbyes, readers discover how animals, trees, and weather prepare for the new season. The soft illustrations and calming tone invites children to slow down, observe nature, and appreciate the quiet magic of change. It’s a beautiful read for curious little explorers and the kids were far more invested when we used the Novel Effect app while reading it. The Golden AcornA race was involved so I had to get this one! The Golden Acorn is a lively story about friendship and teamwork. When Squirrel gears up for the annual Golden Nut Hunt, she’s ready to race to victory—until she discovers it’s a team event this year! Reluctantly joining forces with her friends, Squirrel learns that winning isn’t everything and that working together can be even more rewarding. With its energetic story, playful humor, and beautiful illustrations, this book will delight young readers while teaching the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and caring for others. It’s a fun autumn adventure with a meaningful message! The Very Last LeafThe Very Last Leaf by Stef Wade is a cute little story about Lance Cottonwood, a bright young leaf who’s great at everything— except facing his fear of falling. As autumn arrives and all his friends take the leap, Lance must find the courage to let go and embrace change. Filled with rich autumn colors and lovable characters, this story helps kids understand that it’s okay to be afraid and that bravery often means trying something new. Young readers will love cheering for Lance as he learns that letting go can lead to beautiful new beginnings! Acorn Was a Little WildThis was our second favorite of the bunch. Acorn Was a Little Wild by Jen Arena is a funny and inspiring story about courage, curiosity, and growth. Acorn loves adventure and can’t wait to explore the big, wide worl, but his biggest journey begins when he’s buried underground! Through patience and change, Acorn discovers that sometimes the most amazing adventures happen when we slow down and grow. This one has such a beautiful ending. We'll probably add this to our home library as well. Leif and the FallThis was similar to A Very Big Fall and The Very Last Leaf, but the kids still enjoyed it. Leif and the Fall by Allison Sweet Grant and Adam Grant is a story about facing fears and thinking outside the box. When Leif the leaf becomes anxious about falling, he turns his worry into action by trying creative ways to make his descent safe. With help from his friend Laurel, he learns that even when plans don’t work out, every attempt brings new lessons. This clever and encouraging story inspires young readers to see mistakes as part of learning and reminds them that courage and persistence can lead to amazing discoveries.
